Ph.D. programme description
The recipients of this Ph.D. positions will carry out research activity within the RAISE lab at the Department of Computer science of Sapienza University of Rome, Italy under the joint guidance of Prof. Toni Mancini and Prof. Enrico Tronci.
The envisioned research is aimed at developing novel general-purpose simulation-based Artificial Intelligence–guided methods and software, and at applying them to the areas of interest of the RAISE Lab.

Secondments
- Competitive funds are available to support Ph.D. candidates in spending short periods at other institutions, depending on the needs of their research project.
Required skills and qualifications
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in computer science or a related field
- Command in complex software design and development of large applications in high-level programming languages
- Good knowledge of mathematics, both discrete and continuous
- Good knowledge of algorithms, data structures, operating systems (both theoretical and practical, including Linux proficiency), database design and manipulation
- Knowledge in model-based as well as data-driven artificial intelligence (symbolic AI and machine learning) is a plus
- Fluency in the English language, both written and spoken
- Strong interest in interdisciplinary research
- Good communication skills
We are especially looking for technically strong candidates, with expertise in core technical computer science, not just the application of data science or machine learning methods via the use of third-party frameworks.

The successful Ph.D. students enrolled in a Sapienza Ph.D. programme typically receive a scholarship ranging from € 16.000,00 to € 20.000,00 per year. Also, Sapienza normally increases this amount by 50% during the months spent at an institution abroad (constraints will apply).
These amounts are nominal (gross) amounts and a small deduction will apply for social security contributions according to the applicable Italian national laws (however, no taxes will be applied). The exact (net) salary will be confirmed upon appointment and is dependent on local regulations.
